FBI Provenance and Art Crime Talk + William Kentridge Exhibition Tour
Sponsored and Hosted by Guardian Fine Art Services and The Warehouse
Wednesday, July 20, 2022 | 2pm - 5pm
Guardian Fine Art Services is hosting a special pre-conference lecture, tour, and happy hour reception for conference attendees interested in provenance research, art crime, and the art of renowned artist William Kentridge.
During his talk “Provenance and its Role in Combating Art Crime Globally,” Special Agent David Bass of the FBI Art Crime Team will address how, moving forward, museum professionals can work together with law enforcement on questions of provenance. As stated by the FBI “Art and cultural property crime—which includes theft, fraud, looting, and trafficking across state and international lines—is a looming criminal enterprise with estimated losses in the billions of dollars annually.” Along with case studies, Bass will discuss potential tools used to research provenance, explain how criminals use provenance to carry out crime, and discuss the role fake provenance plays in the legal art market world. Bass will also touch on the challenges of repatriating art and cultural materials to the country of origin and importance of writing accurate inventories and how good record keeping skills can help establish factual provenance.
Stick around after the talk for a guided or self-guided tour of The Warehouse Art Museum gallery and their newest exhibition, William Kentridge: See For Yourself. This exhibition will showcase never before seen work by Kentridge from the Serr & Shannon Permanent Collection, the largest private collection of William Kentridge’s work in the United States. Following the tour, visit with your colleagues as you enjoy happy hour drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
