Objects of Substance
-
Objects of Substance continues a lineage of exhibitions beginning in the late 1960s, in the United States and beyond. These exhibitions looked anew at handcrafted objects made by artists using materials that have long been associated with utilitarian craft traditions, such as clay, fiber, glass, wood, and metal.
Some of these artists were at the forefront of the studio craft movement, which began in the United States after World War II and spread around the world. Along with making functional objects, they experimented with new forms and techniques and explored new ways to approach materials, scale, and the relationship of form and function as they defined new approaches to mediums that were often dismissed for their connections with the domestic realm.
Objects of Substance showcases works of art by some of the leading artists of the studio craft movement as well as contemporary object makers who continue their legacy. Drawn from the collection of Jan Serr and John Shannon, these objects exemplify the couple’s abiding esteem for artists who are committed to making well-crafted objects by hand. Says Jan Serr, “We have a great deal of respect and affection for the craftsperson, the maker, the artist.”
