On Belonging is a photographic and video collaboration between artists Lois Bielefeld and Nirmal Raja. Bielefeld is a Milwaukee native and Chennai-born Raja has lived in Milwaukee for 27 years. Over the course of their collaboration, two bodies of work developed. One project examines the visual understanding of race, and the other project questions the veracity of recorded history. Both series examine Milwaukee while investigating it's complex and various historical, economic, ethnic, racial and religious spaces. In efforts to understand the city (and America), Raja both explores and performs while Bielefeld captures and witnesses creating a complex portrait of Milwaukee. Throughout they ask: what does it mean to call a place home? What does it mean to belong? What does it mean to be American? Learn more about On Belonging on the websites of Bielefeld and Raja.
